A summer morning at the Cappadocia Balloon Festival

I have just returned from Cappadocia, and summer gives the region a very different atmosphere.

The mornings and evenings are often pleasantly cool, while the middle of the day can get very hot. This makes a big difference to how you plan your days. Early mornings are perfect for watching the balloons, exploring the valleys or simply enjoying the landscape before the heat sets in. Later in the afternoon, when temperatures begin to drop, Cappadocia becomes much more comfortable to explore again.

During the hottest hours, it can be a good idea to slow down. Have a long lunch, spend some time in a café or relax at your hotel. Some hotels have pools, which can be a very welcome way to cool down on a hot summer day. Another good option during the hottest part of the day is to explore one of Cappadocia’s underground cities. It is noticeably cooler below ground, making them especially appealing on a hot summer day.

If you are planning to hike, choosing the right time and route is especially important. Some valleys offer more shade than others, while exposed trails can become very hot.

A hat or other sun protection is important, and make sure to take enough water with you – once you are out in the valleys, there may be nowhere to buy drinks along the way.

Despite the heat, Cappadocia is not without color in summer. There are still green areas throughout the landscape, and during my recent stay I saw beautiful hollyhocks flowering in many places.

Summer also brings some special events to the region, and for me, they were one of the reasons to visit Cappadocia at this time of year. BalonFest Cappadocia, with its colorful special-shaped balloons and evening Night Glow shows in Paşabağı, creates an atmosphere you can only experience once a year. The Nevşehir Culture Festival adds concerts and other events to the summer season. I especially enjoyed seeing how many local people and Turkish visitors come together for these events – it gives Cappadocia a very different feeling from the usual tourist experience.

Summer is also generally a good season for hot air balloon flights. The weather is often favorable, but as at any time of year, flights depend on the conditions on the day.

Wind can change plans – something I experienced again during my latest stay.

For me, summer in Cappadocia is about adapting to the rhythm of the season. You do not need to fill the hottest hours of the day with sightseeing.

Start early, take your time in the afternoon and enjoy the cooler evenings.

Cappadocia has something to offer in every season – and summer has its own special character.

Thank you for reading.

I look forward to sharing more stories, places, and experiences from Cappadocia in future journal posts.
